Because I am currently working on a High School the stage of Cognitive Development I most deal with is formal operation. As a Math teacher my students need to use logical reasoning processes applied to abstract ideas, they also need that logical reasoning process for understand concrete objects or situation such a word problems. However my students struggle during the reasoning process. Normally the expectations to draw logical deductions are not achieved. It affects my teaching strategies by planning my classes using hands-on activities/material, by using relevant examples that capture my students attention, and particularly by teaching/modeling them how do attack a problem by doing logical reasoning process. It is clear during their previous schools years a lack of logical reasoning training on the students, so when they face a problem where they have to put together a set of tools in a logical manner they get frustrated and frequently set back.
