Brittany Edmonds OTC Feb. 3

I would tell Ingrid's grandmother that Ingrid has done quite well in some areas, while other areas are needing more attention. Ingrid had been doing exceptionally well in her Reading Comprehension and is in the 92 percentile for her age-group. She is also grasping content in Science with a place of 90th percentile. Social studies is also another areas the Ingrid is advancing with 84 percentile. These content areas are where we find the Ingrid is most successful or easier at comprehending. Although she ix excelling in those ares, Ingrid also had subjects that seem to be a struggle for her that include: Spelling, Math Computation, and Math Concepts. She is struggling the most in Math Computation and seems to have a difficulty understanding how to apply concepts to problems. I would suggest working with her at home by constructing problems and having her relate back to the book on the concepts that she grasp a little better. I would also use problems that relate to things she is interested in or relate to her in some way. If she loves ice cream, use ice cream as "X" for the equation. In regards to math concepts, I would help her to make a study guide on the different concepts that relate to different problems. Don't let her simply memorize them, but have her apply them to the equations. In spelling, I would suggest making it a game such as "Jeopardy" or "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" themed to where she reaps certain rewards after spelling words correctly. This helps her to see spelling as more of a game or fun experience and less of a chore or boring lesson. Along with these suggestions, I would branch out to other resources online that could help you create games for both math and spelling. Our goal is to make Ingrid confident in these content areas, as well as getting her from a 4/5th grade level to at least a 7th grade level on these subjects. I find that it becomes much easier for the student when they are learning not only at school by their teachers but also, at home with their loved ones.

I think that the best way for Ingrid to learn as a student is to make learning fun. I always achieved more when I was being entertained and not just being tolerate. If Ingrid's grandmother to show Ingrid that learning can be fun not only in the subjects she already likes but the ones that she isn't the best at, it will not only improve Ingrid's scores, schoolwork, but most importantly, her confidence to know that she can be more than a test score.
