QTC 5 - Chapter 6

Free Response

One of the things that stood out to me the most was Vgotsky's theory of development. I think it is especially interesting how Vgotsky intertwines all three aspects of context into how a child develops their ways of thinking and learning. Each context is different and different cultures adapt their own ways.

Another thing that was interesting to me was the section on Long Term Memory. I did my teaching project on the LTM Retrieval, but not the storage. It got my attention because I took a psychology last semester where we talked a lot about LTM and STM. Something that was a new concept was "rote learning" where you learn the information without really attaching any meaning to it. It was hard for me to imagine learning something out of context. It didn't really make much sense. Something that was not a new concept was using mnemonics. I often use them to help me remember lists of things.
For Retrieval, I was able to connect prior knowledge with that. In L(Squared) teaching project, I was able to find the article that discussed the difference between recognition tasks and recall tasks, in terms of memory performance. It was cool to be able to connect two classes.

I thought the chart on 212 could be a useful resource for dealing with students with special needs or problems in the classroom. They provided characteristics that you might encounter/observe with one such student, as well as possible strategies to manage the issue. That could be helpful in the classroom, when getting to know your students and learning how to best help them.
