These questions are directed for a English Literature class that just finished reading Anne Frank. They are to answer them in complete sentences.
Question 1:
Which of Anne's character traits stood out to you? (choose two).
Question 2:
In Anne Frank, Anne struggles through being restricted in an environment outside of social norms. Due to this, how do you think Anne's character traits (that you chose) differ the longer Anne is restricted? How would you feel if you were in Anne's position? Would your emotion or feelings differ from Anne's? Why?
Answers:
1. Throughout the novel, Anne is friendly. She wants to befriend Peter and her desire to see her friends when she comes out of hiding. Her happiness also was very important throughout the novel because she tries to make a positive point in every situation.
This question requires low-order thinking because students have one type of information that students are looking for relating to the book.
2. Anne isn't exactly open to befriending Peter at the beginning. The longer she is restricted in the same house with Peter, she grows to, in the end, loving him. Her happiness comes and goes throughout her hiding because she find bits of hope throughout her experience. I would feel scared and unwanted. I don't think I would do as well as Anne. Happiness would be hard to attain throughout the experience. I do think I would try to become friends with the people that I live with because it makes it more enjoyable even with the bad environment around them.
This falls under Bloom's Taxonomy because the students are analyzing there answer from the low-order question and applying it to the second questions. The students also are creating their own perspective in Anne's position.
I definitely agree with you that question 1 is low-order because as you said it is only requiring one simple task for the students to do, and it does not take a high level of thinking to find two traits that they individually found interesting, without requiring them to go into deep detail with those traits. While question 2 is definitely requiring them to analyze their previous thoughts and then apply them to the situation if they were to experience it. Therefore, it requires more than just common knowledge to answer. That being said according to Bloom's it would definitely be a high-order thinking question.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely lower order thinking on question one and question two makes the student go further in their thought process and come up with the answer to that question. Therefore higher order analysis and evaluation thinking involved.
