QTC #5 Carla Pelizzari

My CSEL case study is at the High School level.

My tools that I would use in my class are first and foremost to make my topic at hand something they can actually relate to their lives. I think this helps tremendously on keeping their focus and attention and I believe this helps with classroom management as far as keeping them focused.  My goal is to motivate them intrinsically by doing this strategy.
I will also have them elaborate at the end of class and write for me using their own words how they have made this connection and what they got out of class that day. I plan to ask them not only what they learned but what they found that was interesting that they never thought of before. In return I think by doing this cognitive strategy it will help them with their long term memory and get more out of the class.
For topics that are more difficult such as the grammar structure of the Spanish language I incorporate mnemonic devices such as songs for noun and verb endings. I also have them come up with their own.
For those students who misbehaved they should be assigned a separate homework assignment and are to explain how they can relate to the topic we discussed in class sense they didn't to it during class maybe they need some individual time to think about it.
Over all, I believe that coming up with mnemonic devices such as catchy songs and being able to connect topics with their own lives is the best way to solidify that long term memory.

  1. I like the use of the mnemonic devices I've used it a lot to get items to stick long term. Sometimes I think they make better sense when it is your own invention but I still remember the pardon my dear aunt sally from a math class about thirty years ago.
