Explain the differences among the different taxons in Bloom's heirarchy starting with the lower-order thinking skills and extending through the higher-order thinking (recall/ explain).
Which order of thinking (lower or higher) is more important in a student's overall educational experience? Does the importance of this level of thinking apply also to standardized tests (evaluate/ support)?
1. Blooms taxonomy includes six different processes: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. Remember is when you recall information learned at a previous time. Understand is when one makes meaning from material and information presented. Apply is when a student takes knowledge learned and uses it in a new situation. Analyze is when one breaks down information to see relationships between the parts. Evaluate is to make judgements about certain information. Create is to make something that is many parts a whole.
ReplyDelete2. I think that higher order thinking is much more meaningful for students overall educational experience. For example, the above question was a lower order thinking question and, although I enjoyed answering an easy question for once, it did not necessarily teach me anything because I retrieved the answer from the book. I think that standardized tests should be a combination of both higher and lower order thinking.
These were very good questions to show the difference between higher and lower order thinking! There is a clear difference between the two different types, and it is obvious that you understand this difference.
I agree with Grace! In regards to standardized testing, a nice combination of both types of questions would be ideal. Although retrieval questions may be easier, understanding what definitions ARE and more importantly being able to apply their meaning in higher level thinking is crucial. Great questions!
